Ridiculous!

Judge Michael Pastor threw the book at Dr. Conrad Murray, sentencing him to 4 YEARS IN PRISON.  But Murray will not spend a single day in prison because of a new California law.  He’ll serve his time in L.A. County Jail.  And in jail, at most Murray will only serve half the sentence.
Judge Pastor said, “There are those who feel Dr. Murray is a saint.  There are those who feel he’s the devil.  He is neither.  He’s a human being.”

Judge Pastor says it’s irrelevant to him that Michael might have met this fate with some other doctor.  The fact is, Pastor said, Michael Jackson died because of the actions of … Dr. Murray.”

The judge said he looked at Murray’s whole life, and he was impressed.  But he added Dr. Murray’s recklessness with Jackson overshadowed the doc’s good deeds, calling the treatment, “a cycle of horrible medicine.”

The Judge noted, “Dr. Murray engaged in a recurring, continuous pattern of deceit and lies.”

The Judge was incredulous, saying far from being remorseful, “There’s umbrage and outrage on the part of Dr. Murray against the decedent.”

In the end, the judge said, “Dr. Murray abandoned his patient,” calling his conduct “egregious” and “a disgrace to the medical profession.”

Brian Panish, attorney for Jackson family, read a statement:  “We still look at each other in disbelief.  Is it really possible he is gone?”  The statement goes on …  “We are not here to seek revenge.  There is nothing you can do here today that will bring Michael back.”  In terms of the sentence, the family said: “We respectfully request you impose a sentence that reminds physicians they cannot sell their services to the highest bidder.”

Prosecutor David Walgren, who asked the judge to imposed the maximum, 4-year prison sentence, reminded the judge … Dr. Murray repeatedly lied to authorities about the events in the bedroom where Michael died.  He also noted the recklessness of Murray’s medical treatment.   Walgen called Murray’s treatment a “pharmaceutical experiment.”  Walgren said, “The defendant was playing Russian Roulette with Michael Jackson’s life every single night.”

Walgren also asked for $100 million in restitution for MJ’s kids, because that’s what Michael Jackson would have made in the “This is It” tour. Walgren also wanted Murray to pay a fair amount forfor the $1.8 million funeral.

Murray’s lawyer, Ed Chernoff, told Judge Pastor, Dr. Murray did not want to address the court, but the lawyer said no doubt Jackson’s death is a tragedy that demands punishment, but Murray’s “book of life” is much better than this one chapter.  Chernoff noted Murray was born “dirt poor” in Grenada and led an exemplary life that made him a cardiologist. But Chernoff noted Murray “will always be known as the guy who killed Michael Jackson.”  Chernoff did say, “Michael Jackson was a drug seeker, and Dr. Murray was wrong in providing it.” 

As for restitution … Chernoff shockingly never addressed the obvious — that Jackson is worth more dead than alive.  All he said was Murray couldn’t afford to pay it..

Lady Gaga’s first cameo on the big screen, in new family movie The Muppets was edited out of the film in an effort to cut it short. The Poker face hitmaker is a self-confessed Muppets fan and agreed to film a funny sequence in which she and her all-star entourage, including comedians Ed

Helms and John Krasinski, reportedly squared off against Miss Piggy.

According to writer/producer Clint Morris, director James Bobin was forced to drop a number of scenes to bring the three-hour movie down to 98 minutes.

“Stefani Germanotta’s big moment from the film was cut,” Contactmusic quoted him as writing on MovieHole.net.

“With her entourage, including Ed Helms, Eric Stonestreet… and John Krasinski, Gaga would have gone head-to-head with Miss Piggy in a sequence. Rumour has it Madonna’s Vogue was somehow involved (which makes sense considering Piggy is the editor of Paris Vogue magazine in the film)…”

A British burglar was so drunk when he attempted to rob a family’s home that he ended up falling asleep on the sofa and the cops arresting him had to carry him to the police car, a court heard.

Mother-of-three Nellie Brady, who was home alone during the break-in earlier in November, called the police after she heard footsteps downstairs, then saw the feet of someone she did not recognize on the sofa, the Bristol Evening Post reported.

Alcoholic David Valencia, who drank a third of a bottle of Cognac that Brady bought earlier, was found by officers lying on the family’s sofa clutching the brandy.

“The defendant had to be carried by two police officers to the police car and could not be interviewed until the following day,” prosecutor Amy Jones told the court in Bristol, southwest England. “He had no memory, but was not in a position to deny his guilt.”

As well as causing her fear and panic, Brady said Valencia left a “lingering smell” in the home, according to the newspaper.

Serial burglar Valencia, who has appeared in court 144 times on various charges, pleaded guilty.

Jailing him for two years, Judge Martin Picton said, “There are some people who are almost beyond help and that’s where he is at the moment.”

Miley is the latest celebrity – countless others include Michael Emerson, Kim Kardashian, Cindy McCain; folks from every industry, as you can tell – to take part in the NOH8 campaign, created by Adam Bouska and Jeff Parshley in protest of California’s Proposition 8, which makes it illegal for same-sex couples to wed.

“Thank you @MileyCyrus for taking a stand supporting the @NOH8Campaign!,” Bouska Tweeted following the shoot, a photo from which (above) he posted on his Facebook page.

Expect the completed campaign poster to hit the Internet any day now.

Many might have tuned in to Saturday’s Penn State game, but some advertisers will not take advantage of the extra eyes tuning in in the wake of the college’s sexual assault scandal. Following this week’s news that former defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky had allegedly sexually abused several young boys, advertisers backed out of airing spots during Saturday’s game, as well as upcoming Penn State matches. The Wall Street Journal reports up to a half dozen companies — including Cars.com — have pulled out of airing their commercials on ESPN’s broadcast of Penn State football. “The school’s image is damaged and brands will disassociate,” sports marketer Kevin Adler, of Engage Marketing, told WSJ.

Penn State may also have to worry about its corporate sponsors as well. According to the WSJ, sponsors like PepsiCo Inc., have yet to make any movement, but General Motors Co., says it is “reviewing” its attachment to the school. (Highmark Inc., however, says they are sticking with Penn State.) A rep for ESPN has not immediately responded for EW’s request for comment.

Talk about dramatic exit.

Frances Berwick, the president of Bravo, confirmed today that the network would re-edit the second season of Real Housewives of Beverly Hills after the suicide of Russell Armstrong, whose wife, Taylor, is on the show.

The crumbling marriage of the couple, which was a topic on the popular first season, was supposed to be a major storyline in the second season. The couple filed for divorce shortly after filming wrapped in mid-July. There is no word on what changes will be made, and the network says it still hasn’t decided if it will change the September 5 premiere date for season two. Guess this means more Lisa Van Der Pump for everyone.

It’s hard being Michael Bay, what with all the money he needs to count and women he needs to objectify. Plus, one shitty, loud, oversaturated three-hour car commercial is as good as the next, so you can’t really blame the guy for re-using footage from one in another. He’s got robot testicles to design! Frankly, the very existence of Transformers 3 is so insulting it’s hard to feel further affronted by the fact that its director can’t even bother to shoot new footage—in any event, as /Film points out, it’s not the first time Bay has done this. Jackson County prosecutors today accused a 48-year-old man of sexually assaulting an unconscious woman on a sidewalk in broad daylight Wednesday and later telling police, “I thought that lady was dead.”

Prosecutors charged Melvin L. Jackson, of Kansas City, with a felony of sexual assault in connection with the 11:30 a.m. attack in the 3400 block of Troost Avenue. The victim told police she was walking Wednesday when she felt dizzy and light-headed, so she found a shady area and sat down. She later lost consciousness and said she awoke to a witness yelling, “Help her! Get up off of her!” The victim said she didn’t remember getting assaulted, but she noticed her underwear had been removed.

A witness flagged down a nearby police car, and the officer arrested Jackson, who was walking down the street with his pants unzipped, according to court records. When the officer asked Jackson about his pants, Jackson allegedly said he touched “a lady’s leg,” and “I thought that lady was dead.”

The witness told police she saw Jackson having sexual intercourse with the victim, who was in the fetal position, after another witness brought the assault to her attention, according to court records.

When police tried to interview Jackson, he allegedly blurted, “Did that lady say I did something to her?” He later said, “I have the right to remain silent,” according to court records.

Well, this is embarrassing: News Corp. will probably sell MySpace for less than a tenth of what it paid for the social network, and for less than a third of its stated minimum bid. And, yes, big layoffs are coming.

The rumors of huge MySpace layoffs that we were first to report yesterday are true, inside sources told TechCrunch and then All Things Digital. What’s more, there are now two potential buyers vying for the virtual shantytown, lengthening what was supposed to be a three-hour quick sale, according to All Things Digital said.

The bidders, a digital ad network and a private equity firm, are reportedly offering $20 million to $30 million. That’s for a site News Corp. paid $580 million for in 2005 and announced it would accept no less than $100 million for just two months ago. But at least News Corp. will be able to clear MySpace off its books in time for the end of the fiscal year and then really enjoy its summer. Gin Rickeys all around!
